We've come a long way in the few years that Editors Collective has been around. And one of the most important things, I've learned? It's not about me. It's not about you. It's about us. It's about community. And that together we have the power to make a positive change.
We've all been at this a long time. And personally, I plan on doing it for a lot longer. But the conditions are not on the upswing. They're not even staying static. We're on a rapid decline. We even held that forum with MPEG not too long ago called The Reality That Changed Post. We heard the stories. And the reality is, that this is not a sustainable model. Not even close. And I know that the conversation about union vs. non-union has been going on for a long time. And I love to swap stories about the horrible jobs, and horrible bosses, and horrible conditions. But when does the time come to stop complaining and actually do something about it? And most likely you're already established. And things aren't that bad right now. You've had worse. But, this isn't about you. It's about us.
And now, with strikes over Shahs Of Sunset, and the apparent lack of confidence in our will power, there has never been a better time to show support of our community. Why does NBCUniversal and Bravo think only scripted shows' employees deserve the benefits of a pension and healthcare? I have no idea. In unscripted, we work a hell of a lot harder, in much worse conditions. And let's not forget that this whole reality/nonfiction/unscripted/actually scripted genre began out of a union spat with the writers.
Whether or not you back the union, back your community. Back your coworkers. Because together is the only way we all move forward. It's time to get what we deserve.
